Jesus the Good Shepherd is referenced in the book of John, chapter 10 - John 10:11: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:14-15: “I am the good shepherd. I know my own sheep, and they know me just as my Father knows me and I know my Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.” Jesus is a good shepherd to His believers, just like shepherds are to their life stock. A shepherd would gather his flock into a sheepfold at night for their protection, would defend them and feed them and take care of them. They had a genuine and loving concern for what belonged to them. A shepherd would there to save his flock from thieves, wolves and weather. Jesus is also that loving protector and caretaker for his flock, keeping his believers safe from Satan, who comes to steal, kill and destroy God's people; Jesus in turn saves us from destruction, giving us eternal life.
