Tradition holds that on the 24th March 1320, two criminals were condemned to be burned to death. One of these criminals called on the Blessed Virgin Mary and, after invoking her name, stood on the flames and remained unhurt, while the second criminal was entirely consumed. Pope John XXII recognised this as a miracle and instructed that a chapel called Our Lady of Miracles be built at the execution site.
