Our Lady of Sorrows is the name by which we refer to Our Lady in relation to the seven sorrows in her life - these events in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary are a popular devotion and are frequently depicted in art. These include: The Presentation In the Temple, The Flight Into Egypt, The Loss In The Temple, The Way Of The Cross, Jesus Dies On The Cross, Jesus Is Laid In The Arms Of His Mother and Jesus Is Laid In The Tomb. Before the sixteenth century, the feast was observed only in the Dioceses of North Germany, Scandinavia and Scotland, however soon extended over the south of Europe by the end of the 16th century.
