In 1531, Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego in Mexico and performed the "miracle of the roses". On the rocky terrain of Tepeyac Hill, roses never grew, and certainly not in December. Her first apparition was in 1947 to Pierina Gilli in Montichiali, Northern Italy. She appeared with three swords piercing her breast. During the second apparition, she had instead 3 roses. The first sword signifies the loss of the vocation as a priest or a monk. The second sword means priests, monks, and nuns who live in deadly sin. The third sword means priests and monks who commit the treason of Judas. While the roses, one coloured white, the other red and the last yellow or golden, signify the spirit of prayer, the spirit of expiation and sacrifice, and the spirit of penitence, respectively.Â
