In the year 711, Arabs invaded the Iberian Peninsula and defeated King Roderic in the battle of Guadalete. Roderic's body was never found and, according to legend, he instead disguised himself as a beggar and made his way to the monastery of Cauliniana. There, he went to confession and revealed his true identity to the frair, Frei Romano. Frei Romano asked Roderic to accompany him in his travels, and took with him the statue of Our Lady of Nazareth and the relics of Saint Bras and Saint Bartholomew. They traveled until they reached a place later named Monte de Saint Bartolomeu, in the year 714. They both began to live the lives of hermits, until Roderic left the hermitage and Frei Romano passed away. Before his death, Frei Romano hid the image of Our Lady and the relics in his small cave, where they remained undisturbed for some centuries. These were then discovered by shepherds, where they found the statue of Our Lady of Nazareth, depicted breastfeeding her Divine Child while seated upon a simple bench. Many miracles have occured in the area surrounding Our Lady of Nazareth's statue. "The Chapel of Rememberance" was later built there.
