Saint Faustina was born in Glogowiec, north east of Lódz, Poland, in 1905. After finishing schooling, Saint Fasutina wanted to immediately join a convent, but her parents refused to let her. At the age of 16, Saint Faustina became a housekeeper to help her parents and support herself. However, in 1924, Saint Faustina experienced her first vision of Jesus, where he instructed her to leave Warsaw immediately and join a convent. She packed her bags and left the following morning, however, upon her arrival at Warsaw and after approaching many different convents, was turned away every time. Mother superior for the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy decided to take Faustina on the condition that she pay for her own religious habit. In 193l, she was visited by Jesus, who presented himself as the King of Divine Mercy, wearing a white garment with red and pale rays coming from his heart. In 1934, the first painting of the image was created by Eugene Kazimierowski. In 1937, the first Holy cards with the Divine Mercy image were created and Saint Faustina provided instructions for the Novena of Divine Mercy. By the end of 1937, Saint Faustina's health significantly deteriorated, and she passed away in October 1938.
