There has been little discovery to throw light on Saint Philomena's personal history, however some ardent clients besought her and prayed fervently to make herself known to them. Their prayers were heard and the Saint revealed the story of her life and martyrdom to the three of them - what is extraordinary is that these three individuals lived far apart and were unknown to each other, yet their stories matched perfectly, even down to the little details. Saint Philomena was the daughter of the king of a small Grecian state and her mother was also of royal lineage. They were pagans, and prayed to their idols for a child, with no affect. A Catholic doctor called Publius (now a Saint) decided to talk to them about the one true Catholic Faith, and assured them that their prayers would be heard if they embraced Catholicity. They were finally baptised and the following year, Philomena was born. Her parents lavished every affection on her and she accompanied them to Rome at the age of 13, to plead for peace from war with the Emperor. He agreed to terms of peace, but only if Philomena would be his wife. She refused - she had already made a vow to Jesus Christ two years prior, a permanent vow of chastity. In a fit of fury, the Emperor had her chained in a dungeon, with the torment lasting 37 days. She was warned by Our Lady that she would undergo a most cruel torture for the love of Jesus Christ. Several attempts were made to kill Saint Philomena slowly and painfully, yet these all failed as she was being protected by Our Lady and Jesus Christ. Many bystanders were converted upon witnessing these incredible acts of what can only be described as miracles. She ascended into Heaven after being beheaded.
