Saint Hedwig was born in Bavaria, Germany, and was daughter to Count of Andechs and aunt to St Elizabeth of Hungary. At the age of 12, she married an 18 year old aristocrat named Henry, who then became heir to the dukedom of Silesia, part of Western Poland. In one of Henry's first official acts, he founded the great Cistercian monastery of Trzebnica near Wroclaw. Through this, more religious houses were formed, and religious orders such as the Dominicans and the Franciscans were encouraged to establish themselves in the country. Henry opened a hospital in Wroclaw while Saint Hedwig a lazaretto for women lepers in Neumarkt. Being devout Christians, Saint Hedwig and Duke Henry took solemn vows of continence after their seventh child was born. During her lifetime, miracles as well as prophecies were attributed to the Saint. She continues to be one of Poland's favourite Saints.
