Saint John the Baptist was a contemporary of Christ, who was known for the evangelisation and baptising of Jesus Christ. John was born to parents Zachariah and Elizabeth, through the intercession of God. The Angel Gabriel visited them both to tell them they would have a son and that they should name him John. Saint John began public ministery around 30 AD, and was known for attracting large crowds across the province of Judaea and around the Jordan River. Jesus came to him to be baptised, which he did, and the heavens opened and the Spirit of God was seen like a dove. The voice of God spoke, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." The people there were instructed by John to turn to Christ, calling him the Lamb of God, and these people were among the first Christians. King Herod was alarmed at John's ever growing popularity, and ordered him arrested and imprisoned. He condemned the King's marriage to his half-brother's wife. This condemnation would be his downfall, as the King promised his daugter one wish, and she asked for the saint's head. Saint John died sometime between 33 and 36 AD.
