Saint Roch was the only son of a nobleman in France. He bore a birthmark in the form of a red cross that was deeply marked on his breast. The parents raised Saint Roch in a devout manner - this was proven when the immense fortune he was left with after his parents has died, was distributed among the poor and needy, rather than being used for his personal benefit. He also transferred the ownership of the real estate to his uncle. Once this was done, he joined the Third Order of Saint Francis, and journeyed to Rome to visit the tombs of the Apostles. Arriving at Northern Italy in 1315, he found that an epidemic had broken out. Saint Roch insisted on helping the sick, and went to the hospital of St John, which was filled with those stricken with the plague. Many were cured at the mere Sign of the Cross which Saint Roch made over them, and he performed the same services in many other towns of Italy, until he was brought down with the same dreaded disease. In order not to burden others, he left the house and found a dilapidated hut where he lay down to rest. God provided him nourishment by having a dog from a neighbouring country house bring him bread. He soon recovered and returned to his native town where, unfortunately, he was believed to be a spy. His uncle, now governor of Montpellier, did not recognise his own nephew, and had him cast into prison, believing he was indeed a spy. Saint Roch did not utter a single word for his defense, for he wished to be like Christ, and to accept in silence whatever Heaven had ordained for him. After being forgotten about and spending 5 years in prison, Saint Roch felt his end drawing near, and asked for a priest to administer the last sacraments. Soon after, his uncle and grandmother recognised him to be their nephew/grandson, and they gave him a magnificent funeral and had a church built in his honour, in which his body was entombed. He is the patron against contagious diseases.
