Saint Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon in 1195. At the young age of 15, Saint Anthony was already devoting himself with great earnestness to the study and practice of piety in the monastery at Coimbra. When the relics of St Berard and Companions were being brought from Africa to Coimbra, St Anthony was overcome with a sudden and powerful urge to join the Franciscan mission in Africa and suffer martyrdom as a missionary. His wish to be sent to the missions in Africa was soon fulfilled however, he was soon overcome with a grievous illness, that left him unable to attend as a missionary, and boarded a boat back to Portugal. On his way, a storm drove the ship to the coast of Sicily, and Anthony went to Assisi. No one paid any attention to him, until Fr Gratian had compassion on him and sent him to a quiet convent ner Forli. He was sent to Forli with other brethren to attend the ceremony of ordination. The Superior wanted somebody to give address for the occasion, and all excused themselves - Anthony was instructed to give the sermon, and so he did; first, speaking in a very reserved manner, and then the Holy animation seized him and he spoke with such eloquence and unction that everybody was left amazed. Saint Anthony was then given the mission to preach all over Italy by Saint Francis, and so he did. Saint Anthony would preach in many languages; languages he did not learn, however he was given the gift of tongues. When speaking to crowds, each would hear him in their own language. After his death in 1231, a magnificent basilica was erected in his honour, with countless miracles occurring through Saint Anthony's intercession, making him known as the Wonder-Worker.
