Lawrence: Saint Lawrence was born during a time of great hostility against Christians. Roman authorities charged Christian's of that era with "odium humani generis" (meaning hatred of the human race in Latin). Sixtus, the Great Bishop of Rome, along with his Deacons, were arrested by Emperor Valerian's soldiers and beheaded. Valerian had issued an edict to the Roman Senate that all the Christian clergy-bishops, priests and deacons-were to be arrested and executed. Sentenced to death in the Emperor Valerian's sweeping condemnation of all Christian clergy, Lawrence offended the Emperor by assembling before Valerian the real gold and silver of the Church, the poor. Saint Lawrence was to be burned alive on a griddle in public. A special devotion to Lawrence, deacon and martyr, spread throughout the entire Christian community.
