Saint Catherine was born during the outbreak of the plague in Siena, Italy on 25th March 1347. She was the 25th child born to her mother, although half of her brothers and sisters did not survive childhood, including Saint Catherine's twin sister. After her sister died, she was proposed by her parents to become the widower's replacement wife. She opposed this, and finally her parents allowed her to live this way. Saint Catherine did not choose to enter a convent, and instead joined the Third Order of St Dominic, allowing her to associate with a religious society whilst living at home. At the age of 21, she described an experience she referred to as her "mystical marriage to Christ". In her vision she was told to re enter public life and help the sick and the poor. She soon began to travel, calling for reform of the Church; she was key in working to keep city states local to the Pope; she was credited with helping to start a crusade to the Holy Land; and visited a condemned political prisoner and saved his soul; and also began dictating letters to scribes. Saint Catherine of Siena was instrumental in restoring the Papacy to Rome, and brokering peace deals during a time of conflict and war between the Italian city states. In 1380, she became ill, until she was unable to eat and drink. A mere few weeks later, and she was unable to use her legs. She died on 29th April, following a stroke a week prior.

Feast day: 29th April.
