Saint Cecilia was born to an extremely rich family in Rome, and was given in marriage to a youth named Valerian. Before the consummation of their marriage, Saint Cecilia informed him that she had taken a vow of virginity and had an angel protecting her. He asked for proof, and she instructed him to go to the third milestone on the Via Appia, and be baptised by Pope Urbanus. He followed this and then returned to his wife, where he indeed witnessed the angel at her side. Valerian's brother, upon hearing this, was also baptised and together the brothers dedicated their lives to burying the saints who were murdered every day by Turcius Almachius, the prefect of the city. Saint Cecilia spent her time preaching, and managed to convert over four hundred people, most of whom were baptised by Pope Urbanus. The brothers were eventually arrested and executed after they refused to offer a sacrifice to the gods. Cecilia was also arrested and attempted to be killed, by fire suffocation and then by decapitation. The latter did not work, and instead she lay bleeding for the following 3 days. Saint Cecilia is regarded as the patron saint of music, because she heard heavenly music in her heart when she was married. Her body was later exhumed and found to be incorrupt.Â
