Saint Agnes was born to a wealthy Christian family in 291 AD. She was very beautiful and her hand was sought in marriage by many suitors. She turned them all away, proclaiming that her only spouse was Jesus Christ. The Governor's son, Procop, became very angry when she refused him, and brought her to his father. The Governor promised her many lavish gifts if she would only deny God, but Agnes refused. After being put in chains and sent to a place of sin, Agnes still refused and was then condemned to death. Saint Agnes died a virgin-martyr at the age of 12 or 13, and is buried beside the Via Nomentana in Rome, Italy. Saint Agnes is widely known as the patron saint of young girls, and is also the patron saint of chastity, rape survivors and the Children of Mary.
