Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was born in Castiglione, Italy. His first spoken words were the Holy names of Jesus nad Mary. His father wanted him to join the military, however Saint Aloysius decided at the age of 9 on a religious life, and made a vow of perpetual virginity. A kidney disease prevented him from a full social life, and so he spent his time in prayer and reading the lives of the saints. He was appointed a page in Spain, but kept up his many devotions and austerities, and was determined to become a Jesuit. Saint Aloysius and his family eventually moved back to Italy, and he began to teach catechism to the poor. He joined the Jesuits at the age of 18, and served in a hospital during the plague of 1587 in Milan, and died from the disease at the age of 23. The last word he spoke was the Holy Name of Jesus.
