Saint Clare was born in Assisi on 20th January 1194, and possessed a charming personality and rare qualities of mind. She turned down any suitors that sought her hand in marriage, and after hearing Saint Francis preach during Lent of 1212, at the tender age of 18, decided to lead a life similar to his in the seclusion of a convent. Realising that her family would disapprove, she left her home in secret. She then went to Church on Palm Sunday dressed in her richest garments to attend divine services. Later that night, she attended the little chapel of St. Mary of the Angels, where she met Saint Francis. In front of the Altar, she removed her head-dress, and Saint Francis cut her hair, before covering her head with a veil of common linen. She received a coarse penintential garb, girded with a white cord. Saint Clare was placed in a convent of Benedictine sisters, and soon, her sister Agnes joined her in the sacrifice. Saint Francis then arranged for a little convent for them near the church of St. Damian, where the number of consecrated virgins soon increased. In 1240, an army of Saracens rushed upon the little convent and bagan scaling the walls of the monsatery. Saint Clare was ill in bed, carrying a pyx containing the Most Blessed Sacrament, and was carried to the convent window where she pleaded fervently with the Lord. Immediately, panic seized the besiegers, and they fled from Assisi. On 11th August, 1253, Saint Clare ascended into the realm of eternity, and the following day her body was buried.
