In 1610, Dominic of Jesus-Mary was a Carmelite who came across a dust-covered and somewhat torn oil painting of Our Lady. He shook the dust off of the painting and, kneeling, venerated it with great devotion. Once he had the picture renovated, he placed it on his shelf, where he made it the object of his love and prayers. One night while praying, he noticed some dust had settled on it. He apologised to the Our Lady in the painting for having nothing but his coarse woolen handkerchief to dust it off - to his surprise, the face of the Mother of God took on life, smiled sweetly at him, and then bowed her head. From then on, Our Lady's head remained inclined in the painting. This picture was then placed in the Maria Della Scala church so that more devotees of Mary could venerate it. Many wonderful favours were obtained by those who honoured Mary there.
