Saint Blaise was a native of the city of Sebaste, Armenia. He dedicated himself to the study of philosophy, and later to medicine, in which he had great successes. The science of the Saints was his main focus and, being inflamed with a need to help the poor, he went frequently to relieve them in their sickness. Upon the death of the Bishop, he was unanimously voted to be their pastor, which he accepted. He then retired to Mount Argaeus, where the Lord was pleased to manifest his sanctity by honouring him with the gift of miracles. Some time later, Agricolas, governor of Cappadocia and the lesser Armenia, had been sent by the Emperor to put all the Christians of that city to death. He commanded that all those who had already been imprisoned for the faith be devoured by wild beasts. Once these were set free, the huntsmen saw that these beasts were assembled around the cave on Mount Argaeus, with the Holy Bishop Saint Blaise in the midst of them, performing his devotions. Once news got back to Agricolas, he sent for his men to arrest him. Saint Blaise was then subjected to torture, before being killed by the lake. The republic of Ragusa honours him as their principal patron, and he is the titular saint of many cities.
