Englmar was born as son of farmers in Bavaria. He refused the property of his father and became student of an Armenian bishop. After the death of this bishop, he travelled along the Donau and built himself a hermitage. The people and farmers there appreciated his presence and he had the reputation of being very humble and a good healer of animals. According to the legend, another hermit who was very jealous of his good reputation, killed him and his his body in the snow. St. Engelmar was found on Withsunday and a radiant glow appeared when his body was discovered.
